North Sea energy island could cause Europe to be vulnerable — EnergyWatch

If sabotage were to occur on the future Danish energy island in the North Sea, it could have major consequences. Not just in Denmark, but in Europe.

This is according to the Danish newspaper Berlingske with reference to access to documents obtained by the media.

”Thus, an outage of the total production of the North Sea Energy Island could potentially lead to brown-outs or blackouts in parts of Europe,” the Danish Energy Agency writes in a draft memo from April.

That outages due to the energy island could cause problems has been known since 2021, the documents show, according to Berlingske. This is due to the island’s capacity, which will be 3 GW and later at least 10 GW. This is such a large capacity that ”outages could cause extensive power outages in Denmark and connected countries,” the Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities wrote in January 2021, according to Berlingske.
