CATL Expands with New Beijing Plant Amid China’s Booming EV Market

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL), the world’s leading electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturer, has announced plans to establish its first production facility in Beijing. This strategic expansion is designed to cater to the burgeoning demand for battery-powered vehicles in mainland China. The new facility is expected to strengthen Beijing’s efforts to develop a comprehensive EV supply chain, which will benefit local manufacturers such as Li Auto and Xiaomi in their quest to advance EV development.

The company, with its headquarters in Ningde, eastern Fujian province, is slated to begin construction of the Beijing plant within the current year. The Beijing Commission of Development and Reform, the city’s economic planner, has made public the initiative, yet details regarding the plant’s capacity and the timeline for becoming operational remain undisclosed. The company has exercised discretion and has not issued comments on these specifics.

CATL, which held a commanding 37.4 percent share of the global market by producing 233.4 gigawatt-hours of batteries in the first 11 months of 2023, is set to become a key supplier to Li Auto and Xiaomi. Both firms are emerging as significant players in the EV sector, with Li Auto competing in China’s premium EV market and Xiaomi preparing to launch its inaugural model, the SU7.

Li Auto has achieved impressive milestones, delivering 376,030 intelligent vehicles to customers in mainland China in 2023, which represents a remarkable 182.2 percent increase from the year prior. The company is also considering setting up a production base for car parts in Beijing. Xiaomi, on the other hand, has disclosed its vision to establish itself as a leading global car manufacturer within the next 20 years, with trial production of the SU7 expected to commence imminently.

The EV market in China has experienced a significant uptick in consumer interest, with the EV penetration rate exceeding 40 percent by the end of 2023. This surge is attributed to a growing preference for environmentally friendly vehicles that offer advanced features such as autonomous driving and digital interfaces. As the largest automotive market in the world, mainland China represents about 60 percent of global battery-powered car sales.

This impressive growth, the Chinese EV market remains intensely competitive, with more than 200 manufacturers contending for market share. Analysts, such as UBS’s Paul Gong, project that by 2030, the market will consolidate, leaving only 10 to 12 companies in a competitive position. Fitch Ratings has forecasted a slowdown in the sales growth of battery-powered vehicles on the mainland to 20 percent this year, a decrease from the 37 percent growth observed in 2023.

In the midst of this competitive landscape, CATL is enhancing its technological prowess by preparing to unveil the world’s fastest-charging electric-car battery before the end of the first quarter.

CATL’s foray into Beijing signifies the company’s dedication to supporting China’s rapidly growing EV market. The construction of the new plant is poised to bolster the local supply chain and meet the demands of leading EV manufacturers.
