CATL Expands with New EV Battery Plant in Beijing Amid Rising Demand
Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), the world’s leading electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturer, is poised to inaugurate its first production facility in Beijing. This initiative is designed to bolster the escalating demand for battery-powered vehicles across mainland China. The forthcoming plant is anticipated to play a crucial role in establishing a robust EV production supply chain in the capital, complementing the efforts of notable entities such as Li Auto and the smartphone titan Xiaomi, which are expediting their foray into the EV sector.
The Beijing Commission of Development and Reform has publicized the commencement of the plant’s construction within this calendar year. The economic planning body has, however, refrained from revealing specifics regarding the facility’s production capacity or the projected date to begin operations. The company has opted to maintain its standard practice of not commenting on such developments, consistent with its public communication strategy.
The expansion of CATL coincides with the company’s commanding presence in the global market, where it boasts a significant 37.4 percent share. The company has demonstrated an impressive production volume, with 233.4 gigawatt-hours of batteries generated in the initial 11 months of 2023. Its alliance with Li Auto, a formidable player in China’s premium EV market, and Xiaomi’s forthcoming production plant in Beijing, cements its status as a central supplier to these influential corporations.
Li Auto has been a strong competitor in the premium EV segment, closely rivaling Tesla, and has reported a substantial 182.2 percent surge in vehicle deliveries to mainland customers in 2023, amounting to 376,030 units. Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory has also achieved notable success, with 603,664 units delivered to Chinese customers last year, a 37.3 percent increase. Xiaomi has captured attention with the introduction of its first EV model, the SU7, characterized by its sophisticated design and advanced performance features. The company has signaled intentions for imminent trial production, with CEO Lei Jun expressing aspirations for Xiaomi to secure a position among the top five global car manufacturers within the next two decades.
China’s EV market has experienced a remarkable uptick, with the penetration rate surpassing 40 percent as 2023 drew to a close. This trend reflects a shift in consumer preference towards eco-friendly vehicles that offer cutting-edge functionalities, including autonomous driving and digitized cockpits. As the preeminent automotive and EV market on a global scale, mainland China represents nearly 60 percent of the total battery-powered car sales worldwide.
A fiercely competitive environment with over 200 Chinese EV manufacturers contending for dominance, industry analysts anticipate a market consolidation, projecting that a mere 10 to 12 companies will prevail by 2030. Fitch Ratings has indicated an expectation for a deceleration in the growth rate of battery-powered vehicle sales on the mainland to 20 percent this year, a decline from the 37 percent expansion witnessed in 2023.
In a strategic move to not only cater to domestic needs but also to assert its innovative prowess, CATL is gearing up to unveil the world’s fastest-charging electric-car battery before the culmination of the current quarter.
