CATL to Build First Beijing Plant Amid Rising Demand for EVs in China

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL), recognized as the world’s leading electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturer, has unveiled plans to establish its inaugural production facility in Beijing. This initiative is strategically designed to cater to the burgeoning demand for battery-powered vehicles across mainland China. The forthcoming facility is expected to forge a comprehensive EV supply chain within the capital, thereby enhancing the production capabilities of local manufacturers such as Li Auto and Xiaomi, both of which are expediting the introduction of novel EV models.

The Beijing Commission of Development and Reform, the city’s economic planning agency, has indicated that the construction of the plant is scheduled to commence within the current year. Specifics pertaining to the plant’s production capacity or the exact date it will begin operations remain undisclosed. The establishment of CATL in Beijing is anticipated to serve as a cornerstone supplier to both Li Auto and Xiaomi, particularly as its automotive production facility transitions to operational status.

Li Auto, a prominent player in China’s upscale EV market, has reported a remarkable surge in vehicle deliveries to mainland consumers, with a year-over-year increase of 182.2 percent, culminating in the delivery of 376,030 intelligent vehicles in 2023. This surge places Li Auto in close competition with Tesla, which has also experienced a significant uptick in deliveries from its Shanghai Gigafactory, amounting to a 37.3 percent increase. Xiaomi, for its part, is advancing in the EV domain, having introduced its inaugural model, the SU7, and is on the cusp of commencing trial production. Lei Jun, the CEO of Xiaomi, harbors aspirations for the company to secure a position among the top five global car manufacturers within a 15 to 20-year timeframe.

The EV sector in China has witnessed considerable growth, with the penetration rate eclipsing 40 percent as 2023 drew to a close. This growth trajectory is propelled by an escalating preference for eco-friendly vehicles that are outfitted with autonomous driving features and cutting-edge digital technologies. As the preeminent automotive and EV market on a global scale, mainland China represents nearly 60 percent of the total sales of battery-powered vehicles worldwide. This market dominance, industry analysts project a competitive consolidation, with projections that only a select few enterprises will endure the rigorous competition by the decade’s end.

In the midst of these market shifts, CATL is on track to unveil the world’s fastest-charging electric-car battery before the termination of the current year’s first quarter. This innovation is emblematic of the company’s dedication to pioneering advancements and its influential role in the electric mobility sector’s future.

CATL’s foray into Beijing signifies a pivotal juncture in the evolution of China’s EV industry. The new plant is set to fortify the local supply chain and underpin the expansion of domestic car manufacturers. With the Chinese EV market exhibiting robust growth, the firm’s progress in battery technology and its support for indigenous manufacturers are expected to be instrumental in the automotive industry’s ongoing transformation. The company’s endeavors mirror a larger movement towards sustainable transportation solutions and the continuous metamorphosis of the global vehicle market.2024-01-25T18:24:30.935Z
