Fossil fuels included in adopted COP agreement — EnergyWatch
After long negotiations, an agreement has been reached at the COP28 climate summit, and it is a historic one.
For the first time, fossil fuels are mentioned in a COP agreement.
As part of a global effort, countries are encouraged to contribute to a transition away from fossil fuels in energy systems.
This should help achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
The sentences on climate action are preceded by how binding the points are.
Here, the agreement has ended with a wording that uses the words ”calls upon” and that countries must ”contribute” with the mentioned climate policy actions.
This means that actions are considered a contribution and not a commitment.
