Even beyond January, though, there’s a clear shift underway in how we talk about alcohol. Concepts like “mindful drinking” have taken hold; zero-proof mocktails and sober bars are becoming more common. But at the same time, rates of excessive drinking have risen in the wake of the pandemic. One study found that binge drinking reached a historic high in 2022 among people ages 35 to 50.
