TELUS has announced a significant $6.6 million investment in the North Shore region to enhance its PureFibre and 5G networks. This financial commitment is supported by an additional $6.8 million from the Government of Quebec and $5.5 million from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). The combined funds will facilitate the installation of nearly 10 new 5G wireless sites across the region, promising improved wireless connectivity for rural and remote communities. The initiative, part of the broader CRTC Fund, began with the activation of a site near Lac Daigle, north of Sept-Îles, and will continue with new sites in Baie-Johan-Beetz, Sept-Îles, and Aguanish by the year’s end. Further expansions in Baie-Comeau, Rivière-au-Tonnerre, Longue-Pointe-de-Mingan, and Rivière-aux-Outardes are scheduled for 2025.

Additionally, a new site in Godbout is planned to enhance cellular coverage, with preparatory work commencing this year. Regional Vice-President of Marketing at TELUS, Nathalie Dionne, emphasized the importance of these investments, stating they are crucial for keeping Quebecers connected and supporting regional development through enhanced network capabilities. The project aims to bridge digital and socioeconomic gaps, providing community members with the tools needed to achieve their full potential. Local leaders have expressed their support and anticipation for the positive impacts of the enhanced connectivity. Paul Barriault, Deputy Prefect of the Minganie RCM, highlighted the initiative’s potential to strengthen community resilience and growth.

Léonard Labrie, Mayor of Aguanish, and Michel Desbiens, Mayor of Baie-Comeau, also praised the project for its expected contributions to community safety, economic growth, and regional development. In addition to network expansion, TELUS is committed to significant investments across Canada, planning to invest $73 billion by 2028, including $10 billion in Quebec. These investments will support infrastructure, operations, and spectrum licensing, aiming to improve the coverage, speed, and reliability of TELUS’s networks. The company’s community involvement is demonstrated through its TELUS Friendly Future Foundation, which has contributed approximately $60,000 to local organizations in the North Shore region, reflecting its philosophy of giving back to the communities where it operates.
